Getting Around Glasgow
Train ? & Underground ?
There’s an extensive suburban network of trains in and around Glasgow; tickets should be bought before travel if the station is staffed, or from the conductor on the train if it isn’t. You can get on a train without a ticket in Scotland, if there is no conductor, you will just pay once you are off the train. There’s also an underground line, the Subway, that serves 15 stations in the centre, west and south of the city in a circle (single £1.60). The train network connects with the Subway at Buchanan St underground station, next to Queen St overground station, and St Enoch underground station, near Central railway station. The All Day Ticket (£4) gives unlimited travel on the Subway for a day, while the Roundabout ticket gives a day’s unlimited train and Subway travel for £6.60. The subway is open until midnight every night except Sunday where it stops at 6pm.
Taxi ?
Taxis can be the cheapest way to get around the city if travelling in a group. You can hail a black cab from street. Black Cabs accommodate 5 passengers, with some of the bigger ones taking 6. The fares are very reasonable – you can get across the centre for around £7, and there’s no surcharge for calling a taxi.
Uber is also available which offers cheaper fairs and great convince (download Uber) If you are going longer distances, it is cheaper to book a private hire taxi which can be done via the Uber app on your mobile phone (download Uber here) or you can ring Network Private Hire (0141 557 1110).
Things To Do
If you have some spare time in Glasgow and would like to see some of the sights, here are a few things we would recommend.
Glasgow City Centre:
The city Centre of Glasgow is full of shops and restaurants. For shopping we recommend visiting Buchanan Street which is a long pedestrianised street with 100s of shops. Along the street are 3 shopping centres: Buchanan Galleries, Princess Arcade and St Enoch Shopping centre.
There are also many restaurants, bars and cinemas in the city centre.
Glasgow West End:
For museums, cafés, restaurants and pubs, the west end of Glasgow is worth a visit. Most museums in Glasgow are free to enter. We would recommend visiting the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. From there, it’s a short walk through Kelvingrove park to the main University of Glasgow building, where you could visit the Huntarian Museum or take a walk down the cobbled Ashton lane with pubs, cafes and restaurants. You can get to the west end via Subway, getting out at Hillhead station on Byres Road.
Transport Museum:
Alongside the Clyde is the riverside transport museum, which is free to look around, showing the history of Glasgow transport on show old cars, trams, busses and trains. To get here we would recommend taking a taxi (~ £10) from Glasgow city centre, or taking a train to Partick from Glasgow Central or Glasgow Queen Street. More info here.
Wedding Presents
As you all know we have lived together for many, many years now and so have all the possessions (kitchenware, bedding etc) that we can make good use of. Therefore, we are not intending to produce a gift list.
The one thing which we are working to save towards is a memorable honeymoon, so if you did wish to make a small contribution to that fund then we would be very appreciative ?.
Ultimately, just attending our wedding is an expense for everyone and so we really do only wish for you to join us and share our special day.
Schedule Of Events
1.30-2pm Guests Arrive
After a leisurely morning in Glasgow jump in a taxi (or drive) to House for an Art Lover. Make sure you are there before the bride!
2pm Ceremony
The groom will be there (he promises to be on time for once) and the bride will have just rocked up. Time to kick things off! The ceremony will be a Humanist ceremony and will take place in the Venue. There will be a few songs from a great duo, a couple of readings and maybe a soppy vow or two. Remember to pack some tissue if your eyes are prone to leaking.
2.30pm Drink Reception & Photography
Grab a glass of Prosecco or Beer and raise a glass to the newly weds!
The photographer will be floating around to take some great snaps before he takes the couple (and wedding party) for a few snaps around the grounds and park.
If it stays dry (fingers crossed Glasgow) guests will be able to enjoy the surrounding gardens. A great duo will be performing some belting tunes from 3pm and the bar will be open ready to clench your thirst.
5pm Dinner is Served
It’s time for the speeches. Get ready to raise a glass for the toast.
A three course meal followed by tea and coffee will then be served. Red+ White wine will be on the tables for everyone to enjoy.
7.30pm Evening Guests Arrive
Here some additional super friendly guests will join us in their dancing shoes ready for a boogie!
8pm Party Time!
With a full belly it’s time to head downstairs for the evening party to begin.
A ceilidh band will be ready to perform some traditional Scottish music for everyone to dance to. Don’t worry most of us don’t have a clue what we are doing and the band will call and (attempt to) teach us all the dances!
1am Departure
Last orders will be around 12.30 and we will all bid farewell around 1am.
A short (~10 min) taxi will take you back to the city centre to your hotel.
